The Graduate Teacher Program’s International Graduate Teaching Service (IGTS) was set up in the Fall of 2004 to better meet the needs of international graduate teachers at the University of Colorado at Boulder. As graduate students, international graduate teachers bear the responsibility for giving lectures, running recitation sessions, leading discussions, supervising labs, and carrying out other duties depending on the nature of their departments. Although all graduate teachers strive to provide better learning environments for their students, because of different cultural expectations, international graduate teachers face different sets of challenges as they actually start teaching in American classrooms. The classroom challenges that international graduate teachers face can be grouped into five broad categories: classroom management, methodological, linguistic, affective and socio-cultural issues. The IGTS coordinators organize and/or conduct workshops aimed at helping international graduate teachers have a better understanding of the challenges they may face in their classrooms. IGTS organizes workshops aimed at helping international graduate teachers (IGTs), both TAs and GPTIs, understand the challenges they may face in the American classroom. In both the Fall and Spring Semesters, the GTP hosts a series of workshops for international graduate teachers and the International Graduate Teacher Cultural Intensive. The Fall and Spring semester IGT Workshop Series includes five to six workshops each semester that focus on teaching methodologies, classroom management, and linguistic, affective, and socio-cultural issues.These workshops are led by members of the GTP staff and guest speakers. All international and domestic graduate teachers are invited to attend any session.
