Oyate Aims to Enlighten Audiences during American Indian Heritage Month
Oyate, a CU-Boulder American Indian student organization, has planned a series of events this month that they hope will educate others about the diversity of tribal cultures in America.

Career Services Fosters Professional Development
Career Services at the University of Colorado at Boulder encourages students to become actively involved in their own professional development. "We provide a centralized place for students to explore their professional goals," said Lisa Severy, director of Career Services. "We offer services that range from big picture career counseling to more concrete skills like resume writing and interviewing practice."

		Unseen Colorado Mountain Aquifers Throw Water On "Teflon Basin" Myth New University of Colorado at Boulder research shows high-altitude aquifers honeycomb parts of the Colorado Rockies, trapping snowmelt and debunking the myth that high mountain valleys act as "Teflon basins" to rush water downstream.

Students Assume Leadership on Alcohol Issues
In the spirit of keeping you informed on the progress of campus initiatives, I am asking administrators to provide updates on current plans in their area to share with you through this column. In the second of these updates, I thought you would be interested in the following message from Ron Stump, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, on student initiatives related to alcohol abuse.  


AWARDS AND KUDOS


CU Music Technology Goes International
Five musicians represented CU-Boulder's College of Music at the International Computer Music Conference, the world's most prestigious annual music technology gathering, Nov. 1-6. Director of Music Technology Andrew May, composition faculty Michael Theodore and John Drumheller, viola faculty Erika Eckert and flutist Elizabeth McNutt shared their work at the Miami, Florida, conference. Few schools send as many musicians to an ICMC, and the integrated package of CU-Boulder composers and performers is groundbreaking.


EBIO Faculty Gain Scholarships for Underrepresented Students
Faculty in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology department recently have been accepted into the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation's Minority PhD Program. The proposal written by Professor and Project Director Mike Breed, along with professors Tim Seastedt, Jeff Mitton, Russ Monson and Alex Cruz, resulted in scholarships for three new minority PhD students this academic year. EBIO is the second CU-Boulder department to join the Sloan Minority PhD program. Faculty in the Geological Sciences department participate as well. Managed by the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering, the program offers scholarships to underrepresented students beginning doctoral work in engineering, natural science and mathematics.
