Wanted: Departmental Newsletters for New Inside CU Feature
The University of Colorado at Boulder is certainly a thriving community of outstanding departments with interesting and wonderful accomplishments that many often don't hear about. To help spread the word about the good news in your department, a new Inside CU section, "Featured Newsletter" will debut in the April 12 edition.

Outdoor Engineering Laboratory Promotes Sustainable Building Practices
The College of Engineering and Applied Science is building a unique, new teaching and learning facility that will give students the opportunity to practice sustainable building techniques in an outdoor setting.

GLBT Resource Center Celebrates Ten Years of Service
The Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender (GLBT) Resource Center will celebrate its 10th anniversary in April. CU-Boulder is among only a handful of universities across the country that have a GLBT center that is a decade or more old, according to its new director Stephanie Wilenchek. The center, located in Willard Hall 227, provides education, support and advocacy around GLBT issues. The GLBT Resource Center also provides a safe space for GLBT students, faculty, staff and allies to visit. Many students hang out in the comfortable office to socialize and/or study.

		CU-Boulder Awarded USAID Grant To Train West Bank Journalists The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Colorado at Boulder has been awarded a $190,061 grant from the U.S. Agency for International Development to train journalists from the West Bank.

		Novel Laboratory Technique Identifies High Levels Of Pathogens In Therapy Pool A research team using a novel genetic cloning and sequencing technique has identified a surprisingly high number of airborne pathogens in a Midwest therapy pool, pointing to the need for closer scrutiny of public hot pools, says a new study.

AWARDS AND KUDOS


Susan Avery Selected as Interim Provost
Susan Avery, interim vice chancellor for research and dean of the Graduate School, has been named interim provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs, pending approval by the CU Board of Regents. Interim Chancellor Phil DiStefano said he will recommend Avery for the position at the next meeting of the Board of Regents March 24. Avery has been with CU-Boulder since 1985, initially as an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering.


Bob Shannon Recognized for Innovative Lighting Design
Bob Shannon, senior instructor-dance production and technical director in the department of theatre and dance, has recently been featured on several national entertainment web sites. He also is slated to appear this spring in the national Entertainment Design print magazine for his innovative use of automated lighting in CU-Boulder's production of "Peeru Gunto"

Shannon has been with CU-Boulder since 1991 and has 25 years of mid to high-level professional light design and production experience.


Go Buffs!
The athletics department has several recent victories to celebrate. Men"s tennis recently defeated Harvard 4-3 at the 16-Team Blue-Gray Intercollegiate. Harvard ranks 15 and the Buffaloes rank 75 according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll. The CU ski team recently earned five All-American performances at the NCAA Championships in Stowe, Vermont. Also, senior distance runner Renee Metivier took first place in the 3,000 meter run at the NCAA Indoor National Championships.

The International Festival celebrates its 15th year with live entertainment, cultural booths and free food! Saturday, April 9, 4-10 p.m. in the UMC Glenn Miller Ballroom, join the international students who are an important part of our community in this celebration of diversity. Students from Argentina to Yugoslavia will introduce the many aspects of their cultures in this fun-filled event.


56th Conference On World Affairs, April 4-8
The 56th annual Conference on World Affairs takes place April 4-8. The forums encompass everything from music, literature, environmental activism, science and journalism to visual arts, diplomacy, technology, spirituality, the film industry, politics, business, medicine, human rights and more. New SIDs and Buff OneCards on the Way
Student identification numbers (SIDs) will change from Social Security Numbers to unique, nine-digit numbers April 9. Students can view new SIDs March 28 in PLUS or CUConnect. Also, new Buff OneCards are being issued. Students must pick up cards March 28-April 8 in the new Buff OneCard Office in Cheyenne Arapaho Hall. Faculty/staff cards will be mailed to their homes March 29. New IDs and cards will be needed to access services beginning April 10. For more information visit the Student ID Conversion FAQs page.
