FROM THE CHANCELLOR Rebuilding Our Community In recent weeks, our campus has suffered a disturbing number of racially motivated incidents. As a community, we struggle both to understand and respond effectively to these demeaning and hateful incidents. AWARDS AND KUDOS Professor Christopher Bowman Receives Award Christopher Bowman, professor of chemical and biological engineering, will receive the 2005 Clemson Award for Contributions to Literature from the Society for Biomaterials. Bowman has been recognized for his pioneering contributions to the basic understanding and development of novel dental restorative materials. The award was established in 1974 to recognize significant contributions to the literature on the science or technology of biomaterials. He will receive the award at the Society for Biomaterials 2005 Annual Meeting in Memphis, Tenn. in April. Theatre and Dance Students Compete at American College Dance Festival Five dancers represented CU-Boulder in the American College Dance Festival Northwest Region in March. Of the eight choreographed pieces in the Gala Concert, two were performed by CU-Boulder students. Two pieces also were presented in the informal concert. In addition, 12 theatre students recently competed in the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival Region V. Three of six CU-Boulder teams advanced to the semi-finals, while two were part of the final round. For more information visit the Theatre and Dance web site. Ethical and Civic Engagement Grants Awarded The proposed Institute for Ethical and Civic Engagement has awarded $50,000 in grants to support 10 curricular projects focused on promoting responsible citizenship in CU-Boulder students. The recipients are: Laura DeLuca, anthropology department and Smith Hall International Program; Susan Heinzeroth, Leeds School of Business; Ben Kirshner, School of Education; Robert Kolb, Leeds School of Business; Seana Lowe, INVST Community Studies; Rolf Norgaard, Program for Writing and Rhetoric; Donna Rubinoff, geography department; Willem van Vliet and Michael Hughes, College of Architecture and Planning; Julia Willis, Student Academic Services Center; and Jennifer Wolak, political science department. Earth Day is April 22 April 22 marks the 35th anniversary of Earth Day. The day was originally called the "First Environmental Teach-in" and was founded by former senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin. Nelson got the idea for a nationwide teach-in on the environment after reading an article on the anti-Vietnam Conflict teach-ins of the 1960's. Ways to celebrate Earth Day include neighborhood clean ups, planting trees or flowers and using alternative transportation. They're Phishing. Don't Bite!
