Lorrie Shepard appointed to Governor’s Council for Educator Effectiveness
Governor Bill Ritter announced the appointment of Lorrie Shepard, dean of the School of Education, to the newly created Governor’s Council for Educator Effectiveness. Shepard is the designee of Rico Munn, the executive director of the Colorado Department of Higher Education. The council, created by executive order Jan. 13, works to define educator effectiveness and new educator evaluations tied to student growth. The 15 appointees will tackle education reform at the local level and are tasked with developing and recommending guidelines for adequate implementation of a high-quality educator evaluation system, according to the executive order.

Niels Damrauer named Alfred P. Sloan Fellow
Professor of chemistry Niels H. Damrauer has been chosen as an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Research Fellow. The announcement of the selection of 118 outstanding early career scientists, mathematicians, and economists was made in February. The winners are faculty members at 56 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada who receive $50,000 for a two-year period to conduct research at the frontiers of physics, chemistry, computational and evolutionary molecular biology, computer science, economics, mathematics and neuroscience.

Eric Stade receives Burton Jones Distinguished Teaching Award
Professor Eric Stade, chair of the Department of Mathematics, has been given the 2010 Burton Jones Distinguished Teaching award from the Mathematical Association of America’s Rocky Mountain Section. The MAA board of governors established Section Awards for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics to recognize outstanding teachers who foster student excitement about mathematics. The honor includes a certificate and honorarium, and automatic nomination for the Deborah and Franklin Haimo Awards for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics.
Serving Communities Award solicitation
The Institute for Ethical and Civic Engagement (IECE) is soliciting nominations for the second annual Serving Communities Award to recognize the importance of civically engaged faculty, staff and students. The award will honor one faculty member, one staff member, one undergraduate student and one graduate student who embody the values and actions of an engaged citizen, whose work contributes to the vitality of our communities and contributes to CU-Boulder's civic mission. Each recipient will receive a $500 award and a plaque. Applications are due 5 p.m., March 10. Recipients will be honored at a reception on April 19. Nominations for 2010 Chancellor's Employee of the Year Award
The Chancellor's Employee of the Year Award is presented annually to CU-Boulder staff in recognition and appreciation of exceptional job performance. The award includes $1,500 (subject to payroll taxes) and a commemorative keepsake. All Boulder campus classified and exempt professional staff may be nominated by fellow staff, faculty or students who have firsthand knowledge of the nominee's performance. Submit a letter of nomination along with a minimum of two letters supporting the nomination to Alice Clark, Office of the Chancellor, UCB 17. The packet should not exceed ten pages. Nomination letters must describe why the person deserves to receive the award, with as much specific information as possible. Nomination deadline is Tuesday, March 16. Nominations for President's Diversity Awards
Nominations are being accepted for the 2010 President's Diversity Award. This annual award recognizes significant achievements of faculty, staff, students and academic or administrative units toward developing a more culturally diverse, competent, and inclusive university community. Up to four awards of up to $1,000 each are given for projects or practices that best reflect the implementation of system and/or campus diversity goals. CACMA seeking Diversity Service Awards nominations
The Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Minority Affairs (CACMA) is accepting nominations for the annual Diversity Service Award. This award is given to campus units to recognize their continuing efforts to create a diverse and supportive learning, working, and living environment, as well as their commitment to promoting an understanding of multicultural issues.
